Collecting items isn’t a new thing to me. I used to collect stationery when I was in high school years. But, after a year I change my collectibles to stamps. But, that too did not last a long time as I have no money to support my supposedly hobby. For now, hubby and I consider taking photos of us as our hobby. Hahaha!
Actually, I have learned something in relation to coins and taking coin photos. This is an interesting topic to unveil. The word is “numismatics.” This is the first time to hear it. In my search it means the study or collection of currency, including coins, tokens, paper money, and related objects like photos of coins. In the US, numismatics is grateful for US Mint.
The United States Mint primarily produces circulating coinage for the United States to conduct its trade and commerce. It is the responsible for designing and producing special coin sets for collectors, national medals, American Eagle gold, silver and platinum bullion coins, and commemorative coins marking national events such as the Bicentennial of the Constitution as well as safeguarding and controlling the movement of these coins.
As of 2009, the Kennedy Half Dollar is in high demand. It pushed the US Mint to produce more of these coins even though it’s no longer used in circulation, but for collectors. Speaking of collectors, there are also who loves to collect photos of these coins. As the use of the Internet and electronic visual media becomes more of a vital part of the coin industry, photographing coins, either raw or slabbed, has become an increasing concern with collectors and dealers.
But, one book can eliminate those concerns. The book is called Numismatic Photography published by Zyrus Press and authored by Mark Goodman. It teaches the reader in an easy-to-read and visually rich guidebook format on how to image quality photos of coins using digital camera. Goodman addresses typical problems faced by the photographer, recommends ways of improvements and offers specific tips and techniques for raw and slabbed coins. This is an impressive addition to the coin collector’s arsenal of knowledge. It is recommended for anyone interested in making better coin photos, or in learning how these images are made.
