Hint to Shop Smarter
Look around! Don’t assume that one brand or size is cheaper than other. A bag of orange juice on the discount shelf may cost less than a carton of orange juice in the refrigerated beverage section.- Buy meat by the kilo. Once you’re home, spend ten minutes repacking them into half-kilo packages that you can later defrost when you’re making dinner.
- Choose heads of lettuce over the prebagged stuff, which sells for practically double and really isn’t that convenient – you’ll need to wash it yourself, anyway.
- Shop with a friend at a warehouse store, and split up certain big-quantity items. You may not have room to freeze five kilos of chicken, but if you split it, you’ll only need half the space.
- Skip frozen chicken nuggets, which are not only pricey but also tend to be high in sodium. Make your own nuggets for much less money by cutting up boneless chicken breast into pieces, dipping them into olive oil and them seasoned whole wheat bread crumbs, and baking for ten minutes until done.
- Cut the cost of dessert – and lower your fat and sugar intake – by skipping the cake or doughnuts; instead, buy a box of small dark chocolates. Store them in the freezer and eat one when craving strike.
- Keep your eye on the cash register to make sure items have been scanned at the sale prices. There’s often a mistake!
