Living the Recession High Life

Everyone’s tightening their financial belts, but having less money doesn’t necessarily mean you have to stop enjoying life. A recession can be a frightening experience, but it can also help one develop lifestyle habits that can bring appreciation and joy at the simple life. Life doesn’t stop happening because the stock market falls. People still have to eat, people still want to travel, and people still hang out at home with their families. So, why not learn how to live the high life on a tighter budget, but with a more expansive focus on creativity and joy? Here’s how.

Meals
Eating out is almost synonymous with American modern life. But, that habit eats up tons of money in your food budget and isn’t necessarily good for your health or your weight. Eating at home can help you develop culinary skills that please your family and create a sense of community around the dinner table. What’s really nice is when families learn to share the cooking experience by getting involved in the process too. Make it a fun time to learn new, frugal, recipes and to begin to appreciate the qualities of home-cooked food. Break out the family recipes and pass them on to another generation. Make dinner time, family time, again.

Travel
Even if you’re finding less change in the piggy bank, it doesn’t mean you have to forgo a vacation entirely. Most extended families live in various states or counties and visiting can be a wonderful way to catch up, while keeping motel and hotel expenses low. Road trips, while gas prices are low, are also a great way to visit the countryside on the way with family and friends. Check out areas around your neighborhood you haven’t had time to explore, not just by car, but by bike or foot. It can be a fascinating way to reacquaint yourself with your neighborhood.

Home
If you really can’t make it out, you can still enjoy your time at home. Take time to learn a new hobby, even one that makes some additional money. Many people enjoy sewing, knitting, painting, gardening, or even car repair. Invite your neighbors over for a cup of tea or coffee and try out the latest recipes and catch up on what’s happening in each other’s lives. Or cozy up with a loved one next to a fire, rent a movie, pop some popcorn, and have movie night right at home.
