Who says pregnant women can’t exercise? Well, here are some hard and fast rules that a fit pregnant woman can do.
- Exercise regularly and within your comfort zone. If you were running on a regular basis before you become pregnant, it is fine to continue until it becomes too uncomfortable. For novice in running, pregnancy is not a good time to take it up.
- Exercise on a regular, daily basis rather than intermittently. When your body is stressed by strenuous and unaccustomed exercise, the placenta cannot deliver food and oxygen to your baby as efficiently.
- Use common sense when you exercise. Don’t stress your body by exercising in very hot or very cold weather. And do not exercise if you are feeling unwell, especially if you are running a fever.
- Drink plenty of fluid before and after you exercise. Always do a gentle warm-up and cool-down.
However, women expecting more than one baby or with history of miscarriage, heart disease, diabetes, or cervical incompetence must take care when exercising. Their special circumstances require that they discuss their exercise plans with the doctors.
