Dengue is deadly only when it develops into Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) or Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS). This flu like illness spread by mosquitoes can actually be managed at home, according to the World Health Organization, but only after having a physician evaluates the severity of the disease. For dengue patients, WHO recommends paracetamol, an affordable, non-prescription medicine. This can bring down the symptomatic fever and alleviate the joint pain associated with the disease. Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen as these can reduce platelets in the blood, increasing the risk of bleeding. Go back to your doctor if the symptoms continue after one to two weeks.
